Sailing, as an activity, is therapeutic by nature. Being on and surrounded by bodies of water, participants get to experience a different state of being, are physically active and build close connections with those in their immediate environment. Blue space promotes relaxation, reduces stress and anxiety, boosts creativity, and improves overall well-being. Through experiential learning, participants engage on a kinaesthetic, visual and auditory level.
Sailing Into Wellness’ Therapeutic Approach integrates an Adventure Therapy model, with a mix of Experiential, Person-Centred and Strengths-Based approaches. While this combination lies at the core of our Therapeutic Approach, complementary approaches such as Community Reinforcement Approach and Trauma-Informed Approach are often blended in, to meet specific groups’ needs.
The focus is on activities and shared experiences with the facilitators and other group members. Participants are aided to process and identify emotions within success, disappointment, responsibility and self-esteem and transfer skills learnt back into their everyday lives.
A person’s internal strengths, best qualities and resources are the primary focus. Using a form of positive psychology, participants are aided to find solutions themselves and feel empowered by their achievements.
Sailing Into Wellness builds programmes around sailing which engage participants on a cognitive, emotional, behavioural and social level. These experiences act as a catalyst for personal wellbeing and personal development.
This is a non-authoritative approach where the focus and priority is the client. Sessions are led by the individual’s unique worldview, needs and preferences. The participants lead the process and thus feel empowered to decide the appropriate changes in their lives.
Community Reinforcement Approach involves psychological intervention that focuses on finding healthier ways to meet social and emotional needs. C.R.A. advocates behavioural intervention that includes collaboration of participant and facilitator, goal setting and tracking, reflection and pro-social activities.
A Trauma-Informed approach recognises and understands the nature and impact of trauma on people. By providing physical, psychological and emotional safety, participants are helped to rebuild a sense of control and empowerment. Programmes facilitate when an individual has been triggered to a trauma response or is outside their ‘window of tolerance’.
